It was a bit of an odd week considering I had the day off for Canada Day on Tuesday, so writing this now my brain has not processed it is the end of the week. Given the short week, I don’t have too much to report on, but I have done a lot of work this week and previous weeks on some promotional material for Banting House that I have been having a lot of fun with! This work includes the “This Week in History” posts that have already gone up and will have more going up soon, as well as the filming and editing work I have done to accompany Banting House’s participation in the upcoming Historic Places Day.
As you may have seen from our social media, Banting House is a listed site in this year’s #HistoricPlacesDay and we are excited to be apart of this week-long event! In preparation for this event, I attended a webinar that gave helpful resources and advice for promoting our site for the event. After the webinar, I knew I wanted to promote Banting House for Historic Places Day through a series of videos showing our incredible volunteers sharing their favourite Banting House histories that they give on tours. Every place has a story and I was excited to highlight the people at Banting House who share those stories everyday! For the last few weeks, I have slowly collected all of the videos I need for this promotion and I managed to get a story for every room in the museum. I have been hard at work editing them to get ready for posting them, and I’m excited for you all to see the stories our amazing volunteers have shared! Stay tuned from July 11th-20th to see what we have in store.
I’ve also done a lot of work for our “This Day in History” posts and I am learning so much through putting that content together. Now that we have a solid list of significant days in history relevant to Banting House and we have a social media calendar to keep ourselves on top of posting, these posts are really getting their moment to shine. There is a lot of Public History techniques that go into making one of these posts too! It can be quite tricky to condense everything that I could say about the history we’re sharing, but it has to be clear and concise to capture the attention and engage the public audience. These posts go through a lot of drafts and reworking to perfect them, but the more I make, the more I understand how to make them, which is an excellent skill to develop in my field! Overall, I am very happy with the work I’ve been doing for promo and posting and I am excited to see what next week brings!
