This week brought something new with something not so new to me. At the beginning of my internship, I spent a little bit of time working on a special ArcGIS project for Banting House, but I have gotten so busy with other things that I haven’t gotten back to that project until this week. It has been really great to revisit the work I did not only at the beginning of my internship, but the work I did on this project for my Public History program. I have quite enjoyed adding new pieces to the assignment I started in October and making it even better than before!

During my Master’s program in Public History, I got the opportunity to experiment with ArcGIS, a story-mapping program available online. As I was working with Banting House at the time, and knowing I would return for this internship, I decided to make a story map focusing on the places in London where Banting went while he was living here based on the house calls he wrote down in his ledger. With the constraints of the due date, I wasn’t able to get everything I wanted in the handed in assignment, but it was always my plan to expand on it during my internship. This week, that is exactly what I did! It was a lot of fun to do all the research, get photos, and cross-reference my sources to get everything I needed, and even more fun to take my time to do good work with it without the looming deadline. It was also really great to take something I learned in my studies and actually implement it effectively in my job! I built great skills through my Public History field Master’s program in class that I am improving upon everyday in practice!

I found the continuation of this project very exciting. I liked doing it the first time around, but now without the pressure of a due date or associated grade, I have the freedom to take my time and work closely with Banting House to make it something that we can all be proud of! It’s still a work in progress, but it is coming together nicely and I am thrilled with how everything is coming together! As always, I am excited to see what new things next week will bring!
