When I’m not in the basement organizing archives or on the main floor guiding tours through the museum, you can find me in an office room on the second floor glued to my laptop. Programming museum activities and promoting through social media are two big parts of working in a museum. Both jobs involve me on my laptop working away, whether that be on Canva making designs to post on our socials, or on various websites doing research on creative ways we can engage with our visitors.
Did you ever think about who was behind the posts you see Banting House post on their socials? While I don’t make every single post that appears on our social media feed, anytime you see the light and dark coloured Banting blues to border an image, you can bet that it was my hands putting it all together! Incorporating these elements is one of the ways I am helping the museum establish a consistent brand and voice in posts that can carry on after I have completed my internship. I’ve had a lot of fun creating this content for our social media audience to see. Posting on social media is just one of the tools museums can use to encourage the public to engage with the awesome history they have to share! At this point, I’ve become pretty experienced with Canva, the platform we use to make all these posts. I have used it plenty in the last few years to make posts for some of my other jobs, and I’m glad to have the opportunity to continue developing this skill that I will surely continue to use in the future!
More than posting on social media, I’ve had got opportunities this week to participate in other programming for the museum. In fact, a scavenger hunt program that my boss and I have been working to develop for a long time has progressed past the hypothetical into something that will be tangible very soon. My boss has given me a lot of great ideas to play with and do the research to develop into something the museum can actually implement. I will give more details when the programs are available to the public, but for now, I am thrilled to be working on some very neat projects that will hopefully be active in the museum soon.
